  • Create a Journaling Space– A journaling space is a place where you can write with little to no distractions. Section off your desk, sit on the floor, go to a quiet library, or sit at a local coffee shop. Anywhere you feel the most peaceful is the perfect place to write.
  • Choosing the Right Time of Day– When journaling, what time do you feel more relaxed? Early in the morning? Late at night? Or even way past midnight? Whichever time makes you feel the most comfortable and creative is the best hour to start journaling.
  • Let Go of Perfectionism– Your writing is not suppose to be perfect whatsoever! This is a personal and intimate moment with yourself to express your rawest emotions. It does not have to make sense all the time, have structure, or even be grammatically correct.

You can also utilize journal prompts that can help intentionally dive deeper into yourself. Simply asking yourself open-ended questions like “What am I feeling right now, and why?”, “What’s been weighing on my heart?”, or “What is something I’m proud of myself for?” are great ways to get your creative juices flowing.

Alternative Journaling Methods

While the most popular method of journaling is putting pen to paper, it is not just about writing. There are many different journaling methods and techniques that can help guide you along this new journey.

  • Audio diaries – These entries can take the form of audio or video recordings that document your mental well-being, life updates, or anything else you want to reflect on. There are plenty of journaling apps to choose from, and iPhone users even have a built-in journaling app designed specifically to capture these kinds of moments.
  • Mind dumping/ Stream of consciousness – This method involves journaling without structure—just saying or writing whatever comes to mind. Let your thoughts flow freely without worrying about grammar, order, or meaning. You can also speak into a notes or journaling app and let it transcribe your words into text to look back on later.
  • Visual Journaling – Use doodles, sketches, paintings, or collages to express how you’re feeling. This is a powerful form of journaling when words aren’t enough and you need a more creative outlet to process your emotions.
