On March 7th, 2025, Lady Gaga released MAYHEM to capture her love for music and duality in developing a variety of genres and music styles. For instance, MAYHEM is an incredible showstopping album that reveals Lady Gaga’s true identity and personal mayhem as Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta and an iconic performer. From releasing a glimpse of her album with her single “Disease” to airing the “Abracadabra” music video during the Super Bowl, Lady Gaga produced an unskippable and genre-bending fourteen-track album. Emulating internal chaos and wanting to break the rules as an artist, not being identified by one genre and music style. Thus, the album captures the birth of a beginning and finding peace at the end of the album which showcases who Lady Gaga is throughout her music career by creatively implementing a variety of genres to communicate her message. But how exactly?

“Disease”

Genre: Dark Pop, Synth-Pop, & Industrial-Rock

The album introduces “Disease” as their opening to the pandemonium that Lady Gaga created for her Little Monsters. Inspired by her inner darkness and facing her fears, she produced a dark pop, synth-pop, and electropop song with heavy industrial rock elements to complement MAYHEM. How did she tie it all in? You may have noticed the rhythm and industrial beat sounds familiar if you listened to “Closer” by Nine Inch Nails. NIN’s “Closer” influenced Lady Gaga to implement heavy industrial sounds throughout her album, which led to her desire to learn and explore industrial music. Gaga’s strategic use of industrial elements in “Disease” helped further communicate the message about her facing her fears. For instance, “Disease” fits perfectly as the first track to lure her listeners into understanding her chaos, just like how Gaga expresses her inner darkness tempts her into turmoil. It’s an amazing introduction to understanding the concept and tone of her album. It doesn’t stop there. “Disease” is also an outstanding song to play to give you charisma while walking to your next destination. Eventually, the song will have people believe you are Lady Gaga with the confidence you bring while stepping to the beat of the song as you walk into the room.

“Vanish Into You”

Genre: Glam Rock & Disco

“Vanish Into You,” similar to “Die With A Smile,” has a sense of peace within the track and creates an impactful melody as a love song. Inspired by David Bowie’s artistry, the fifth track is a glam rock and disco song about yearning and longing for lasting love. The song conveys the message through her lyrics: “When I die, can I vanish into you?” because she expresses the emotion of wanting to love and be with the person so badly until she disappears into them. A poetic yet gothic lyric that can capture the listener’s desire for unrequited love from an avant-garde song. Thus, “Vanish Into You” is the perfect song to long for someone by blasting it in your headphones while slowly dancing alone in the dimmed living room with your eyes closed.

“Shadow Of A Man”

Genre: Dance Pop, Cinematic Funk, & 80’s Synth-Rock

Lastly, the eleventh track is a diamond in the rough that couldn’t wait to shine like a sparkly crystalized glove. “Shadow Of A Man” is a cinematic funk and 80’s synth-rock song inspired by Michael Jackson’s legacy as the “King of Pop.” The addictive melody contains 80’s funk elements from Michael Jackson’s era in “Bad” and “Thriller.” Lady Gaga’s decision to pay tribute to the late pop legend with “Shadow Of A Man” showcases her versatility in music styles and the opportunity to create nostalgia for the listener. In addition, the infectious song dives deeper by conveying a theme of empowerment based on her experience of being overshadowed by the music industry. Therefore, the track showcases her journey of standing out and dancing in that same shadow. “Shadow Of A Man” will have you moonwalking like Jackson and singing powerfully like Gaga. We recommend listening to the track while you are getting ready to go out with your friends so that the melody boosts your energy and makes you feel like you will own the night.
