I’ve been thinking a lot about perspiration lately—specifically how to keep it (and my dry-cleaning cost) at bay, from the stress sweat to the summertime body odour.
Mary Futher, also known as @MadameSweat, is a burgeoning TikTok star, and I, like many others, can’t get enough. A beauty brand she founded, Kaia Naturals, aims to help women deal with “awkward physical discomforts.” Futher, with her distinctive dark dishevelled pixie, black-rim circle spectacles, and deep fuchsia lip, tackles every sweaty topic under the sun, from thigh chafing to why one armpit stinks worse than the other.

One of her guiding concepts when it comes to keeping underarm odour under control is to properly cleanse the underarms for a fresh start: Deodorant, especially natural versions, might be more effective if the pits have been cleaned of odor-causing bacteria. Using charcoal (which removes pollutants) and other natural antibacterial elements like salt and apple cider vinegar, she came up with her brand’s detoxifying Underarm Bar soap. Sweat doesn’t smell because it provides food for bacteria to eat, according to Futher. The stench is caused by the bacteria feeding on the food. As a result, your odor-free hours will go considerably further when you manage odor-causing microorganisms. Because it does not prevent sweating, it is an essential component in a natural deodorant practise.”
Since I’ve been using the Underarm Bar to wash my underarms daily (at least 20 seconds per armpit, according to Futher’s advice), I’ve put it to the test. Despite the fact that it’s a little more messy than my regular bottle of body wash, the effects far exceed any murky water. As a bonus, bar soaps have a great tactile appeal to me. Deodorant may make a huge difference in how long it takes me to go odor-free, no matter what kind of product I’m using (I switch between natural and conventional depending on the day). Because my underarms have become softer, smoother, and clearer, I’ve noticed an improvement. It’s basically an armpit detox mask that’s both a therapy and an insurance policy for a long, hot summer’s day.
