Longtime Writer, Producer, and Showrunner Shonda Rhimes is celebrating her 20th anniversary in the Industry. With that being said, we at Hustle thought it would be a great idea to look back on some of the many achievements Rhimes has collected over the years.
Shonda Rhimes first burst onto the scene in 1998 with her short Blossoms and Veils, which she wrote and directed. Then a year later, Rhimes wrote for the HBO TV movie, Introducing Dorothy Dandridge, based on the true story about the first black woman who was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress. Rhimes would then write the movie Crossroads (2002), the cross-country adventure movie about three childhood friends who pursue the dreams that they once put aside. Crossroads, would also be Britney Spears acting debut. Two years later, Rhimes would get her screenplay credit and story credit for writing the fan favorite sequel to The Princess Diaries.

However the star would not shine brightest until the year 2005; for that is when she would become a television showrunner with her show Grey’s Anatomy. Rhimes would win two Emmys for the show in 2006, making her the first black woman showrunner to win the award. The show would go on to win another Emmy the next year. Grey’s would then get a spin-off series, Private Practice, in 2007; which would win NAACP awards for one of the actors, Taye Diggs, and for Rhimes herself. After this Rhimes would find a hold on the Thursday night lineup on Disney’s ABC network with her other shows, Scandal (2012-2018) and How To Get Away With Murder (2014-2020) along with Grey’s. Rhimes would then go on to create Station 19 (2018-2021) a show about firefighters that occasionally interact with the doctors in Grey’s Anatomy.

In more recent years Rhimes has been putting her all into getting more stories about black women seen and made. For example, in 2023 she produced a miniseries called Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story. She also, in the same year, produced a documentary about the origins of the first black barbie doll, Black Barbie: A Documentary. Most recently Rhimes produced The Residence, a dramedy about a black woman detective who investigates a murder in the White House. With two decades of groundbreaking storytelling under her belt, Shonda Rhimes continues to shape the television landscape, championing diverse narratives and pushing creative boundaries.
