Why Did Jeff Baena, Indie Director and Aubrey Plaza’s Husband, Die So Young?

Jeff Baena, the accomplished indie filmmaker known for his offbeat comedies Life After Beth, The Little Hours, and Joshy, has tragically passed away at the age of 47. His body was discovered by an assistant at his Los Angeles residence on Friday morning, with law enforcement confirming his death. The cause of death has not been immediately disclosed, though some reports suggest it was a suicide.

Baena, who married actress Aubrey Plaza in 2021 after nearly a decade of dating, was celebrated for his unique directorial voice. He was widely recognized for his dark humor and unconventional takes on various genres. His first feature, Life After Beth (2014), a zombie comedy starring Plaza, set the tone for his career, which included notable works like The Little Hours (2017), a black comedy inspired by The Decameron, and Spin Me Round (2022), a dark comedy starring Alison Brie.

In addition to his directing career, Baena was a gifted screenwriter. He co-wrote the existential comedy I Heart Huckabees (2004) alongside David O. Russell. He also worked on several notable films with Russell, including Three Kings and The Fighter.

Baena, who graduated from NYU’s film school, started his career working as a production assistant for Robert Zemeckis and an assistant editor for David O. Russell before becoming an established director. His films, often shown at prestigious festivals like Sundance and South by Southwest, were praised for their modern sensibilities and humor.

In addition to his filmmaking legacy, Baena is remembered for his dedication to his craft and his close partnership with Plaza. The couple’s collaborative works remain an enduring part of his artistic legacy.

Baena is survived by his wife Aubrey Plaza, his mother Barbara Stern, his father Scott Baena, and other family members. A statement from his family asked for privacy during this difficult time.

His passing marks a profound loss in the world of independent cinema, as well as for his friends, family, and colleagues.
