Out East Essentials: Eat, Beach, Shop, Repeat

By Teller Thomas

It’s officially summer in New York City, which means walks along the Hudson River, sidewalk happy hours, and, most importantly, weekend escapes out East. Summer in the Hamptons is calming, classic, and chic—full of beautiful views, delicious food, and no shortage of things to do. Here’s your go-to guide for enjoying the very best of the season.

Let’s start with the food. Whether you’re craving fresh seafood, cozy Italian, or an unbeatable burger, the Hamptons food scene delivers. In Montauk, Duryea’s is a beachfront staple overlooking Fort Pond Bay—and a favorite among celebrities. You can’t go wrong with the creamy lobster Cobb salad, Blue Point oysters, or the perfectly grilled lamb chops.

In Sag Harbor, head to Sen for fresh sushi and standout noodle dishes. With a wide selection of specialty rolls and a la carte options like toro and uni, it’s a must-visit. Across the street—or at the second location in Southampton—Tutto il Giorno serves authentic Italian in a light, modern space. The tuna tartare and spaghetti pomodoro are menu highlights. And for one of the most iconic burgers in New York State, don’t skip Sag Harbor Tavern. Sister to Brooklyn’s Red Hook Tavern, their dry-aged Tavern Burger topped with just American cheese and white onion is simple and sublime.

Now, the beaches. Every beach in the Hamptons is a gem, but some truly stand out. Cooper’s Beach in Southampton offers a café, restrooms, lifeguards, and that ideal sand-to-surf ratio—perfect for a full day in the sun. Sagg Main Beach in Sagaponack has a similar vibe with just a touch more serenity. And if you’re up for a quick ferry ride, Sunset Beach on Shelter Island delivers on its name, offering romantic oceanfront views and a chic dining experience at the Sunset Beach Hotel.

Shopping is practically a sport out East. East Hampton is home to luxury staples like Chanel and Ralph Lauren, plus trendier boutiques like Aviator Nation, Reformation, and Unsubscribed. For more eclectic finds, head to Sag Harbor, where Flying Point Surf Shop is packed with sandals and swimwear, Thriftknd is a vintage-lover’s dream, and LoveShackFancy is a floral fantasy of soft pastels and ruffled dresses.

Looking for more than just sun and shopping? You’ll find plenty to fill your days. Southampton hosts charming summer carnivals and an annual Greek Festival. Vineyards like Channing Daughters and Wölffer Estate offer tasting flights and snacks daily. For an artsy afternoon, visit The Parrish Art Museum, featuring works dating back to the 19th century alongside upcoming exhibitions from James Howell, Raven Halfmoon, and more. Want something low-key with friends? Host a beach bonfire, organize a potluck, or stroll Lighthouse Point in Montauk at sunset.

Whether you’re out for a quick weekend or soaking up the whole season, the Hamptons offer a timeless mix of nature, culture, and indulgence that’s hard to beat. It’s summer at its finest—relaxed, sun-soaked, and just a little bit glamorous.
