Design and Features

A recent Nintendo Direct presentation that debuted on April 2, 2025 revealed more information about the Switch 2. Let’s first talk about the design and new features of the upcoming console. As the name suggests, Nintendo’s next gen console has a similar design to the original Switch. The Switch 2 will be a hybrid handheld console with detachable controllers known as Joy-Cons 2. The console will be able to connect to your TV via a dock similar to its predecessor. This may seem strange considering Nintendo is known for changing the design of their consoles often. But considering how the Switch was Nintendo’s second most successful gaming console according to Polygon, it makes sense that the company came to this conclusion. The new design of the Switch 2 has larger kickstand for better flexibility, Joy-Cons that attach magnetically, bigger SL/SR buttons and control sticks for better comfort and precision, and two USB-C ports.

A lot of new and upgraded features have been added to the Switch 2 makes it far more superior to its predecessor. The first significant difference between the Switch 2 and the original Switch is the display. The LCD display of the Switch 2 will be 7.9 inches which is a great difference to the original Switch’s 6.2-inch display. Another notable feature is enhanced hardware capabilities. The Switch 2 will run at 120 fps on a 1080p hi-res screen. ​The advancement will make for smoother gameplay and a better visual experience. The display also provides HDR for better visual contrast of images. The internal storage of the Switch 2 is 256 GB which is 8x bigger than the original Switch. The Switch 2 has also integrated a new communication feature called GameChat. A microphone has been built into the console and a new C button has been added to the Joy-Cons 2 which allows gamers to chat with friends while playing. 

Release Date and Pre-Orders

According to an announcement video that Nintendo released in January 2025, the Nintendo Switch 2 is believed to be released sometime later in 2025. Since then people have speculated that the new console will come out during the summer. The gamers will be happy to know their theories were correct. The Nintendo Direct on April 2, 2025 confirmed that the Switch 2 will be released on June 5, 2025. After the presentation, more articles have come out on further information about pre-orders. According to IGN, Nintendo officially announced that pre-orders for the Switch 2 start on April 9th.

Prices and Bundles

According to the official Nintendo website, The Switch 2 will cost $449.99. The ​Nintendo Switch 2 will come with the following: Nintendo Switch 2 console, Joy-Con 2 controllers (L+R), Joy-Con 2 grip, Joy-Con 2 straps, Nintendo Switch 2 dock, ultra high-speed HDMI cable, Nintendo Switch 2 AC adapter and USB-C charging cable. Nintendo will also release a Nintendo Switch 2 + Mario Kart World Bundle which will cost $499.99. This will include everything the standard bundle has plus the new game, Mario Kart World. For more information on Mario Kart World tune into the Nintendo Direct presentation on April 17. Nintendo has also announced that digital games will be $80 and physical versions will be $90.

Backward Compatibility and Accessories

Nintendo aims to facilitate a smooth transition for existing users by ensuring backward compatibility. During the same Nintendo Direct presentation, it was revealed that Switch games will be able to be played on the Switch 2. However, it was also stipulated that certain Switch games may not be compatible with the Switch 2. The Switch 2 will be able to play three types of games, Switch 2 games, Switch games, and Switch 2 edition games. Switch 2 edition games are Switch games that have been revamped and upgraded for the Switch 2. Most likely new accessories will be made for the Switch 2 just like the original Switch. Some new accessories that were revealed during the Nintendo Direct were the camera and pro controller. With the camera connected to the console, players will be able to webcam with their friends while playing games. The new pro controller for the Nintendo Switch 2 has a built-in audio jack along with the new C button.

Launch Titles and Game Strategy

Nintendo has revealed many games that are coming to the Switch 2. New games that will be launch titles for the Switch 2 are Mario Kart World and Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour. Some games that will receive a Nintendo Switch 2 edition are The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and Sid Meier’s Civilization 7. Other games that will appear on the Switch 2 during its lifetime are Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, Pokemon Legends: ZA, a new IP, The Duskbloods, and many more. ​
