East Coast vs. West Coast. Why Not Both?

By: Alex Damiano

It’s official, your closet has become a lawless land. On one end, the Office Siren: pencil skirts, sharp blazers, brick and ivy, and an energy that screams, “Don’t expect a text back.” On the other end, the California Boho Girl: frolicking through the desert in breezy fabrics, layered lace, and sun-bleached denim, and she will text you back… after a week of finding herself in Joshua Tree.

Be the girl who can do both.

These trends have taken over the internet, and while TikTok and fashion forums urge you to pick one or the other, I say: why choose at all? Having a personal style isn’t about signing your allegiance to one aesthetic. It’s about wearing whatever makes you feel like you, so if you’re dressing based on your energy, welcome to the coast-to-coast wardrobe breakdown starring the two biggest leads in fashion right now.

The Office Siren

This girl takes her coffee black. She wears sunglasses indoors, not to be rude, but to let people know that she has more important things going. She’s mysterious. She breeds power. She is not someone who goes unnoticed, but her movements remain subtle. She wears silk blouses, structured tailoring, and has just enough allure to make HR worry but never complain. This is East-coast fashion through and through. She doesn’t have to say it, because she is it. She doesn’t just do her job, she dominates it.

Key Pieces: Tailored mini skirts, sheer black tights, fitted vests, button-ups and blouses, shiny loafers, a cologne that can mix genders, and petite fit glasses.

Coffee? She’ll take it iced, and oat milk is a must. Her biggest accessory is a beaming smile, with color sunglass frames over each crinkled eye. The vibe is all about softness, in silhouette, in fabrics, and in energy. She is reading your palms on the beach in linen. Or riding her bike in Santa Monica with her white lace dress flowing in the wind behind her, most likely manifesting something. She is West coast to the bone. Listens to Lana Del Rey while waiting in line to get her smoothie from Erewhon, clad in worn-in denim.

Key Pieces: Knit tops, flowy maxi skirts, suede slouchy bags, tinted sunglasses, boots that tell a story, and chunky jewelry that you’d find at a street sale in New Mexico

How To Be Both

These looks may appear as polar opposites, but that doesn’t have to be the case. If you’ve ever felt the same way, and I’m sure many of us have, you can never be confined to one style box. So let’s stop forcing it, because the real magic exists in the in-between areas.

Bringing together the softness and freedom of Boho with the sharp edge of the Siren is all about layering and accentuating the stark contrast.

If you have the dream bell sleeve top that everyone, and I mean everyone, is pining over right now, try layering a fitted vest on top and a denim mini skirt. Throw on some boots. To die for.

Or if that oversized blazer you’ve been itching to wear to a girls’ night out has been collecting dust in your closet, well, you better blow it off. Layer it over a flowy, romantic dress and some statement jewelry with loose curls… may just be the showstopper of the night.

And don’t get me started on a maxi skirt paired with a collared button down, it’s absolute perfection. It’s where the office meets the beach. Where the bosses of NYC meet the muses of California.

Fashion isn’t about sides. It’s about telling a story. Your story. And if you think what you’re doing is strange, it’s because it’s innovative. Art never became anything special because it blended in. Break the rules. Show up to a meeting in a red lip and linen. Or go to the beach in a sneaker and blazer.

These trends emerge and elevate through playing with textures, colors, and mixing aesthetics. And they may come with catchy names, but they’re not the holy grail you must live by. They’re simply the starting line, and it’s up to you to tell the world how it ends. Now go and build your dream coast-to-coast closet and rewrite your story.
