What Makes a Fashionable City: The History of Fashion Capitals Paris, London, Milan and New York

Although many places can be deemed as “trendy and influential” these four cities stand out the most within fashion communities, and have rightfully been dubbed as fashion capitals. They are some of cities with multiple high-profile fashion events taking place each year.

Paris has been an established fashion capital since the reign of King Louis XIV in the 17th century, with its royals and aristocracy combining high-end clothing and decadence, hence driving a fashion revolution. This lifestyle was reinforced in the early 19th century when Charles Frederick Worth, the first fashion designer as regards to dressmaker, started his own business in Paris despite being born in England. The city of Paris has a prestigious fashion institute, well known fashion schools, exhibitions, and world-class fashion houses and ateliers such as Louis Vuitton, Yves Saint Laurent, Dior, and Chanel. The famous Paris Fashion Week is divided into three categories – menswear, ready-to-wear, and haute couture – having the only couture week out of the other major fashion capitals. Paris Fashion Week is held twice a year – one in spring/summer and once in autumn/winter – with hundreds of shows and events held at locations throughout the city such as the Carrousel du Louvre, Palais Royal, Hotel De Ville, Pompidou, Invalides, Grand Palais, the National Museum of Modern Art and Palais de Tokyo. Paris and its chic fashion is considered timeless due to its rich history, artistic heritage, and elevated influence.

London’s status as a fashion capital is fairly recent, despite its major historical significance in textile production as well as it being home to the luxury fashion house, Burberry. London’s international fashion reputation exploded thanks to famous artists and musicians from the 1960s and 70s. This was due to the prevalence of Punk Rock music culture, designer Vivienne Westwood, and the emergence of the city’s premier fashion university Central Saint Martins. London’s fashion week began in 1984, largely showcasing designers’ collections with catwalk shows, along with showrooms and static presentations. These are frequently held in Somerset House but recently changed to different locations with the effect of showing off different tourist attractions throughout the city. London’s fashion is known for blending tradition and avant-garde, where history meets cutting-edge design, with eccentric and extraordinary designers as well as emerging designers pushing creative boundaries alongside established brands.

Milan is one of the oldest fashion capitals as it started with prominence and political power throughout the Middle Ages and Renaissance era, particularly with an abundance of art and luxury goods. Many Italian fashion brands are based in Milan despite being founded in other Italian cities. This was solidified by the contributions of 20th century designers such as Roberto Cavalli and Georgio Armani. Milan fashion week was founded in 1958 and is held twice a year, with catwalk shows and exhibitions showcasing high fashion and masterpieces of Italian designers, sometimes taking place in outdoor landmarks, historic areas and occasionally in modern showrooms and studios. Milan is known for its luxury fashion and craftsmanship with elegant, sophisticated designs and impeccable tailoring because of its deep history with art, power, and well-crafted luxury goods since before more modern media, fashion shows and trends, and other events.

New York became a fashion capital during World War II, a time when the city’s Garment District started manufacturing garments, parachutes, etc. for the war efforts. At that time, the major fashion press also could not travel to Europe for new clothing or design inspiration due to international safety issues, spurring creativity and ingenuity from home especially when already creating textiles during the war. Nowadays, New York is known for glamorous fashion as well as everyday styles and streetwear with major contributions from designers and fashion brands such as Calvin Klein, Coach, Michael Kors, and Kate Spade. New York has significant impacts on international fashion trends thanks to its world-class creative talents, retail spaces located in urban areas, well-known production companies, fashion and design schools, and media-centric events and trade fairs. The first New York fashion week was in 1943, and now occurs twice a year with a spring/summer collection released in September and a fall/winter collection released in February. New York’s fashion is known for innovation, creativity, and diversity with ready-to-wear fashion – practical yet stylish designs appealing to a large audience combined with a mix of avant-garde and commercial fashion in part of the city’s fast-paced nature and multicultural influences.

Besides these four major fashion capitals, many other cities also have a growing influence in the fashion world with fashion weeks appearing in unexpected locations, designers doing pop-up one-off shows, newer designers debuting collections in their hometowns, and not to mention the ever-evolving sustainability, technology, and cultural diversity.

For example, the city of Los Angeles has emerged as an American fashion hub with an easygoing, bohemian lifestyle due to influence from it being the home to many successful actors, influencers and other celebrities. The city has hosted a few designer shows and built newer locations for major fashion houses, as Los Angeles Fashion Week relaunched in October 2022 with a focus on fashion, beauty, technology, and sustainability instead of seasonal fashion.

Tokyo also has a unique fashion scene which is considered creative, diverse, and vibrant, from heritage culture to street fashion showcasing local designers and international brands in its biannual fashion week and frequent, unannounced fashion parades using the streets as runways. Across the world, Copenhagen is known for minimalistic and high-quality fashion, as layering and darker colors that are more common in colder climates are embracing sustainability and eco-friendly materials. Copenhagen fashion week is held in January/February and August accompanied with fashion showcases, events, and trade shows.

Many cities have emerged or are currently emerging as important fashion hubs and inspirations for designers and fashionistas alike. Cities like Paris, London, Milan, and New York have remained major fashion capitals for decades because of their unique history and influence in other areas. Other cities such as Los Angeles, Tokyo, and Copenhagen continue to gain influence in the fashion world. But the truth is, people can find fashion inspiration and importance in many ways, regardless of where they live or where they consider fashionable or trendy.
