Singer Rihanna revealed she’s pregnant with her and A$AP Rocky’s third child at this year’s Met Gala on May 5 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Significantly, A$AP Rocky served as a Co-chair at this year’s Met Gala, with Anna Wintour, Pharrell Williams, Lweis Hamilton, and Colman Domingo. This isn’t the first time the Fenty Beauty owner announced a pregnancy at a major event. She revealed her second pregnancy during her Super Bowl LVII halftime show performance in 2023, becoming the first person to headline a Super Bowl halftime show while pregnant.
Met Gala History
The Met Gala has been held on the first Monday in May since the 2005 Gala. There was no Gala in 2020 due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, and the 2021 Gala was moved to September as a result. The Met Gala returned to its usual date in 2022, and continues to take place on the first Monday in May.
Founded by Eleanor Lambert, the Met Gala, formally called the Costume Institute Benefit, is the annual haute couture fundraising festival held for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in Manhattan. The Gala, known as “fashion’s biggest night” is popularly regarded as the world’s most prestigious and glamorous fashion event. Attendees are allowed to express themselves through fashion, often producing elaborate and highly publicized outfits inspired by the evening’s theme and broader cultural context.
Since 1948, the Met Gala has taken place consecutively each year, except in 1957, 2000, and 2002. Themes were introduced in 1973, which took place on March 21. The theme was The World of Balenciaga, and was sponsored by the Government of Spain. There were no Co-chairs until the following Gala in December of that same year, which was chaired by Phyllis Ellsworth Dillon (1910-1982), wife of diplomat and politician Clarence Douglas Dillon (1909-2003). Since 1995, Anna Wintour has been the lead chairperson of the event (excluding 1996 and 1998), marking 30 years as chairperson with this year’s Gala.
