Breathe. Study. Repeat: Conquering Test Anxiety Together

You know that feeling—sweaty palms, clammy hands, and a pounding heart you just can’t control? That’s anxiety. It’s a natural emotion that makes you feel uneasy or worried, which is usually triggered by uncertainty, and it can show up both physically and psychologically.

Since it is almost final exam season, many students may be experiencing different levels of anxiety and don’t know how to manage it. Not only is it exam season, but many people are taking their permit/license exams, interviewing for jobs, and more, which can be very mentally taxing. While these exams are sometimes extremely difficult, do not psych yourself out of them! Instead, use some of the tips in this article to make sure you do your best.

Here’s your guide to coping with test anxiety!

Prepare ahead of time
Many people make the mistake of putting off their studies until the last minute, then trying to cram all the information they need into a short period of study time. Give yourself plenty of time to fully understand the material by setting aside study time during your breaks or days off. Use study methods like mind mapping, active recall, or creating flashcards to ensure you are well prepared for your exams.

Use relaxation techniques
Deep breathing, meditation, and even a light workout can help relieve some stress. There are apps like Calm and How We Feel that offer techniques that specifically cater to stress relief.

Eat and sleep well!
Sleep boosts your memory and concentration. Plus, when you are well-rested, your brain functions much better! As for eating, try to avoid sugary and unhealthy foods around test time. While it is a coping mechanism for some to stressfully eat, try substituting unhealthy meals and snacks ones that fuel you with energy and nutrients.

Don’t tie your worth to a score!
A test score does not define you or how hard you have worked! Do not get tricked into thinking your tests can make or break your future. There is always another chance, so keep that in perspective.

This year, don’t let exam season take you out! Take charge and do the relaxation prep needed to ensure you are in the best mindset to ACE your exams, and you will do fine. Good luck!
